Seminar 3 will be taking place on the 3rd of October 2023 at 11am – 13pm (BST).
The seminar will discuss evolving responses of public health professionals to emerging public health hazards, and the challenges that exist for promoting and protecting the public’s health and integration between health system partners. Key questions will include:
- The key public health and public health workforce challenges systems have faced and will face in the future – and what can and must be done to address these,
- The opportunities to develop a broader and more sustainable public health workforce, including through multidisciplinary and intersectural engagement and collaboration,
- The role of public health professionals in providing and developing leadership across health systems and beyond, to handle public health challenges and emergencies.
Our Chair Professor Neil Squires
He is the Director of Global Operations for UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). He is also a doctor who trained in primary care, tropical medicine and public health. Neil has spent the majority of his career working internationally, including being the Head of Profession for Health at the Department for International Development (2011-2014).

Professor Kevin Fenton CBE PrFPH PhD FRCP
Kevin Fenton is the President of the Faculty of Public Health. He is a senior public health expert and infectious disease epidemiologist who has worked in a variety of public health executive leadership roles across government and academia in the United Kingdom and internationally. His specialist interests are in tackling health inequalities, infectious disease prevention and control, climate justice and urban health.
Dr Laura Magaña
Laura is President and CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). She is also the founding President of the Global Network for Academic Public Health (GNAPH), an alliance of seven regional associations representing schools and programs of public health worldwide. Prior to joining ASPPH, Dr. Magaña dedicated more than 35 years to successfully leading the transformation and advancements of public and private universities in Mexico; educational organizations in the United States; United Nations programs; and nongovernmental organizations in Central America and Europe.
Dr Carl Reddy, MB. ChB, FCPHM, M.Sc. (Epi)
Carl is is the director of the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) at the Task Force for Global Health. Dr. Reddy provides strategic, technical and operational direction to the TEPHINET network which comprises 80 member FETPs, regional networks and numerous partners and stakeholders across the globe.
Dr Mollent Okech
Mollent is a seasoned human resource for health professional and trainer in the health sector. She currently works for the World Health Organization based at the country office of Papua New Guinea. She is responsible for providing technical guidance to countries to strengthen the health systems with an emphasis on the health workforce.
Dr Huan Xu
Dr Huan Xu is coordinator of WHO’s work on the Roadmap on Public Health and Emergency Workforce. He joined WHO in 2022 from country health authority continuing his portfolio as an expert in Public Health and Human Resources for Health.
